Discover Ivrea: Piedmont’s UNESCO Industrial Gem

Are you ready to explore something truly unique in Piedmont? Welcome to Ivrea, a small provincial town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. This charming town blends history, design, and gastronomy, offering a fascinating journey for travelers who want to experience the region beyond its famous wines.

The Olivetti Legacy: A Pioneer in Industry and Design

Ivrea’s modern identity is inseparable from the Olivetti family, who transformed the town into a model of innovation and social progress. In 1908, Camillo Olivetti founded the company that would create Italy’s first typewriters, including the legendary Lettera 22, combining function and design. Camillo personally trained workers from the surrounding countryside, fostering a culture of craftsmanship and precision.

His son, Adriano Olivetti, expanded the vision. Inspired by his travels to the United States, Adriano modernized the factory with new technologies, management methods, and marketing strategies. He also created a human-centered factory, prioritizing employee welfare, education, and community development. Schools, hospitals, housing, and the Olivetti Library with over 50,000 volumes were part of his vision, making Ivrea a social and cultural laboratory still studied worldwide today.

Thanks to their legacy, Ivrea became Piedmont’s industrial and cultural landmark, drawing attention for its unique combination of innovation, architecture, and community planning.

UNESCO Recognition

In 2018, Ivrea was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its 20th-century industrial architecture, urban planning, and the Olivetti approach to social and economic development.
